Monday Greens – an approach to have fun on Monday…

You cannot continuously improve interdependent systems and processes until you are progressively perfect interdependent, interpersonal relationships.

– Stephen Covey, author

At YHWorks, To make Monday a fun day (and avoid the impact of Monday blues), we started “Monday Greens” – an infotainment activity of 1 to 2 hours, which focuses on fun and soft-skill development. The idea was inspired by experience from our previous employer. We deliberately try to avoid discussions/sessions on work (projects) we do. There is no exception – everyone will (and should) contribute to these activities. There is no rank or experience counted while involved in this activity. We pick the theme/subject, decide on the format, and follow it till everyone is covered.

Subject/topic selection is an interesting process. We ask the team to share various subjects/topics on which they would like to have activities/sessions. We prepare the list and do voting (everyone votes). This list is re-ordered (the highest voted to be on top) and we pick the first topic/subject from the list. We keep doing these activities of topic/subject selection periodically. Here are a few topics (not in order) from the list – that we have covered in the last one and a half years:

  1. Book Review (fiction or non-fiction)
  2. Bring awareness (session) on an innovative product that launched recently
  3. Learning from others’ failure
  4. Quiz/Games
  5. Sell the movie (convince the audience to watch the movie of your choice)
  6. Tourist Places

At present, we have started on Debates (based on the mix of Asian parliamentary and US presidential formats). There is also the concept of the winner for a session or activity. The winner is selected by voting based on certain predefined questionnaires. All will vote and based on average, the winner is declared.

We try to avoid being too academic and keep the fun elements. It is not restricted to only conference room activities, and always has sessions or activities spread over multiple weeks. Some activities can be finished on the same day and may have an external speaker also for expert subjects, like awareness on Personal Finances, stock trading, trekking/tour experiences etc.

We hope these activities may help the team in one or another way in their personal and professional life.

Great going YahWorks. It took me decades back when we used to have such sessions, not on Monday though… Saturday sessions 😊.
We do value personal growth and develop skills which will not only help in our professional work but at personal level too.

Hi Aniket, Yes, that’s an inspiration from Saturday Sessions with small tweaks but the concept remains the same. Thanks to Nitin Sir and Makarand Sir for introducing us to that concept in early stages of our professional life.
